My best friend and roommate from UCLA. We transferred to UCLA together from UC Irvine and joined the rowing team, as well.

Santa Monica Christmas [California Dreamin']

resize0033.jpg

Welcome to a California Xmas in Santa Monica! I graduated UCLA so I was familiar with Santa Monica but had never been to the Shopping Mall Santa Monca Place or 3rd St. promenade. I was too busy and too poor. [銀行] I realized how great a place really California is and did it with my family!

resize0036.jpgresize0037.jpg

UCLA is located near Beverly Hills as well, and of course, I never went shopping there, either. It was cool to see some famous people and paparazzi while pretending to be rich.
Below, this is Leo's first trip to Trader Joe's, my favorite grocery store. I used to work here part time and got to know the variety of products very well. Leo seemed to like it, too!

Japanese style 1st Bday! [Todd's family]

Celebrating my son's [1]st B-day in Japan was a cultural eye-opener. I like living in Japan when I get to learn new things and think in a different way. [爆弾] For example, here in the pic below you see a rice cake with a kanji figure on it (isshomochi). It can be read in 2 ways: 1.8 kilograms or "whole life", meaning that we wish our son to never go hungry his whole life. It shows that in pre-modern Japan people struggled to feed themselves and the infant mortality was high. We should appreciate every meal.[レストラン]

resize0027.jpgresize0030.jpg

Leo is wearing the rice cake on his back to represent that life is not easy and we have to struggle to survive. How true!
The red rice and beans above is called sekihan and that is the the literal translation, seki is red and han is rice, while the fish is called Tai, which is sea bream and the Japanese use this term to express pleasure so it shows how seafood, even a fish is part of the Japanese psyche.

We went to TDS for Leo's [1]st birthday and enjoyed staying in the Mira Costa Hotel again. This hotel's name is the same as the University I grew up near[雷]...what a coincedence.

Halloween [My Cool Japan]

resize0027.jpg

Leo's [1]st [ドコモポイント]Halloween costume. He was born on Novemeber 25 so it's actually his second Halloween.

resize0005.jpg

Woody is holding Leo the Jack-o'-lantern! He was a good Jack o Lantern and I was a good Woody. Toy Story is a pretty good movie and brought to us by Steve Jobs and Pixar so I enjoyed wearing this costume.

Coronado Island [California Dreamin']

Coronado Island has the best hotel and beaches of San Diego. We were very lucky to stay there. (not at the hotel, but the island.) My Dad is retired USMC so we could stay with them at a special hotel reserved just for the Armed Forces. It was Leo's first time in the swimming pool so he looks a little scared, but he was the youngest baby to climb on the jungle gym so he wasn't scared at all!The picture below shows him playing with a pachinko machine in the park!

My hometown, Oceanside, the Big "O" [California Dreamin']

This is the main tourist attraction of my hometown, [遊園地]
The picture below of the beach is taken from the pier and shows a sand art image. Can you figure out what it is? It is a lion. I was unable to fgure out what it was but when I finally did, I was so happy! [ひらめき]
On the beach, this is Leo's first time ever on a swing. [遊園地]Judging from his smile, you can see he enjoyed it!

Summer Celebration, Jewish style [Todd's family]

[カメラ]Let's have a great time in California! Narita [飛行機]Airport is certainly not the best airport in the world but for my son, he looks like he's ready for action.
Leo slept in a basonet on the plane but it was not easy getting him to sleep. It was my first time to travel with children so whenever you see parents traveling with kids, give them sympathy. It's nice to have passengers around who smile at your child and keep him occupied.
I used to wonder why parents were flying with small children but I realized there is often no choice.
On this trip, we attended my nephew's (Ben) Bah Mitzvah so Leo is wearing the traditional cap.He and I enjoyed it! [カメラ]
